Alumni Spotlight: Jamie Beckstrand

I graduated from South Dakota State University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness and minors in Animal Science and Economics and I am currently working as a Business Banker at United Prairie Bank in Southern Minnesota.

What initially drew me to SDSU was the close-knit campus that immediately felt like home, along with the strength of the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences. During my time at SDSU, I was actively involved in Block & Bridle, Little International, and the Jackrabbit Memorial Jackpot Show. Through these organizations and the job and internship opportunities I pursued throughout my four years, I was able to build lifelong friendships and professional connections that have played a significant role in getting me to where I am today.

I attended the CAFES career fairs all four years as a student and truly valued the networking opportunities and exposure to potential employers. Today, I have the opportunity to return to the same career fair representing United Prairie Bank. I genuinely enjoy meeting students who are the future leaders of our industry. Each time I leave Brookings, I have a list of students I would be thrilled to work alongside and employ at the bank—a true testament to the quality of SDSU students.

My advice for current students is to never stop learning and growing. Don’t be afraid to admit when you don’t know something and always be willing to ask for help or advice. It’s easy to stay where you are comfortable, but growth happens when you take the next step. You will never regret challenging yourself and expanding your career. Lastly, remember that it’s not just what you know, but who you know. Networking is incredibly important—get involved in student organizations, service groups, and community committees. You never know when your next opportunity will arise.
