Alumni Spotlight: Brad Wermers

My journey as a Civil Engineer began at SDSU in 1984. After graduating in 1989, I started my professional career at Banner Associates, Inc., eventually becoming president in 2018. Banner has been fortunate to have its corporate office in the same community as SDSU, and as a Civil Engineering consulting firm, we have proudly hired engineering graduates throughout our 70+ years in Brookings. In appreciation of SDSU’s contributions to our company, we take great pride in giving back by sharing our professional knowledge with SDSU students and staff.

My involvement as a current member of the SDSU Dean’s Advisory Council, a past member of the SDSU Civil and Environmental Engineering Advisory Council, and a mentor for the SDSU chapter of Engineers Without Borders on a project in Bolivia are just a few of the ways I have had the privilege of contributing to the university community. Over the years, many of our staff have also found meaningful ways to engage with SDSU, whether through teaching assistance, professional speaking engagements in the classes, or other efforts that help prepare students for their professional careers.

If I were to offer one piece of advice, it would be this: never be satisfied with average. This mindset will constantly challenge you to grow—not just in your professional life, but more importantly, in your personal life. Striving each day to be a better person than you were yesterday sets the path to getting the most enjoyment out of life.
