“I started at SDSU in the fall of 2017. After my freshman year I decided to take a break to gain field experience. In wake of the events of 2020, I thought it be best if I resume my degree in the spring of 2021. Returning to SDSU was the best decision I have ever made. Had a few meaningful internships with different contractors. On campus, I was involved in several clubs including Construction Management Club, Joint Engineering Council and Formula Society of Automotive Engineers. Outside of school, volunteered with Brooking’s Sleep in Heavenly Peace Chapter. I graduated this past spring with my Bachelor of Science in Construction Management with minors in Heavy Highway Construction and Engineering Management. Returning to SDSU gave me the capability and the resources to excel in the career I have today.
Today I work for Kraemer North America, a heavy civil contractor based out of the Midwest. My role as a Field Engineer is to help keep projects on track while helping to create innovative solutions. Each project is different, but I do have some advice for up-and-coming engineering students or anyone entering the construction field.
First, don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. The most important part of this line of work is those who perform the work. Spend time learning about the trades (even in school, if you have the chance). Second, don’t be afraid to ask questions. This industry has a great breadth of knowledge, so take advantage of every opportunity you are given. Third, travel and take advantage of new opportunities. There are so many things to learn and experience and no better way than trying a different internship or joining a new club.”
